AQUARIUM SPECIALIST

Dallas Aquarium Experts is currently looking to hire an Aquarium Specialist for our Service Department. Daily routine includes duties such as:

Cleaning and maintaining fresh and saltwater aquariums in customer’s homes and businesses
Monitoring the health of fish
Cleaning and maintaining all filtration equipment
Testing and maintaining proper water parameters
Assistance with the installation of aquariums

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science, Environmental Science or related field, or several years’ experience maintaining personal aquariums
Experience with keeping tropical freshwater, marine fish, coral and invertebrates
Applicant must possess a thorough knowledge of disease recognition, daily aquarium husbandry, food preparation, nutrition, and water quality necessary for tropical specimens
The ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds is necessary
This is a full-time, hourly position which will include “Subject to Call” weekends
Applicant will be driving a Company van on a daily basis

What is Mechanical Filtration in an Aquarium

Mechanical filtration serves the simple function of removing visible particulate matter from the water column in a saltwater aquarium and delivering it to a point were it is easily removed during regular Aquarium Maintenance and /or where it can be broken down into less toxic end products. Dallas Aquarium Experts recommends “Berlin” style sumps which are the most common type and are highly recommended when providing proper aquarium maintenance for saltwater aquariums and reef tanks . These sumps contain a micron filter sock in the first stage which is designed to catch debris. Filter socks should be changed out and replaced at each aquarium service.

The Importance of Filter Socks in Saltwater Aquarium Maintenance

Filter socks are used as an effective first stage of an aquariums filtration process and should be placed so that water coming from the tank filters into the filter sock first removing uneaten food, detritus, organic waste, dust and other small particulates from aquarium water. This dramatically improve water quality and reduce maintenance on pumps, reduced sump cleaning and less impact on the biological filtration by removing the excessive waste that would otherwise break down in the system. The routine use and rotation of filter socks will help reduce ammonia and nitrate producing organic waste from accumulating.

How many times can I clean and reuse a filter bag?

Aquarium filter socks are designed for one time use. Attempting to clean a filter sock will stretch the material. Some holes will get bigger and allow particles to get through. Other holes will get smaller, plug up faster, and start removing things from the product that are supposed to stay in it.

Why aren’t my aquarium filter socks lasting as long as they used to?

Usually because they are working harder. Bag life is limited by the amount of debris captured, not by hours in service or gallons processed. Filter socks on aquarium with a low biological load may clean water for up to four weeks but most need to be changed out every two weeks, some may be up to once per week. A filter sock can appear clean to the naked eye and still be full of particles that are too small to see.

To get rid of nuisance algae keep the algae nutrients Nitrate and Phosphate under control at the levels recommended for your system.This can be achieved with reef-spec protein skimming. Do not over feed your tank. To prevent adding unnecessary Phosphate to your aquarium water, rinse and drain off excess water from all frozen foods prior to feeding.

How do I prevent or get rid of cyanobacteria?

This often can be controlled by raising the Nitrate level to at least 0.25 ppm.
