Dallas Aquarium Experts specializes in aquarium maintenance services for commercial and large residential reef tank and saltwater aquarium maintenance services. During typical aquarium service we replace filter media designed to be replaced, filter socks, filter pads and filter cartridges are replaced at every aquarium service. However chemical filter media may not require being changed out at every service. There are two types of chemical filter media we typically use to maintain proper aquarium water chemistry. We will suggest the type of chemical filter media; amount and frequency of use of to improve the chemistry of our client’s aquarium.

Chemical Filter Media

Carbon

Carbon absorbs impurities and heavy metals from aquarium water. It also increases water clarity, reduces foul and absorbs tannins. Carbon removes toxins produced by corals and is often used after medicating an aquarium to absorb residual medication.

Carbon works will in a filter media bag placed in a high-volume flow area. It is most effective when used in a fluidized media reactor with moderate to high flow rate. We suggest replacing your carbon filter media every 2-4 weeks or done during your regular aquarium maintenance service. Regular usage is recommended as it will help keep your water crystal clear.

Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO)

Granular Ferric Oxide absorbs phosphate and silicate from aquarium water. Since phosphate is algae fuel in an aquarium, we recommend using GFO regularly in the aquariums we service to help curb nuisance algae growth. In a reef tanks phosphate is important for coral health and in ultra-low nutrient systems we do not recommend the use of GFO. A po4/phosphate measurement of .02ish is optimum, up to .08 is fine in reef tanks. GFO does affect alkalinity, so be sure to test and buffer your water accordingly when using GFO media on your system.

GFO works best in a fluidized media reactor with a gentle flow creating a mild tumbling of the GFO, too much flow and the media will get pulverized into powder. We recommend replacing GFO during your regular aquarium service every 4 to 6 weeks or as needed based on the level of phosphate in your aquarium.

Protein skimmers attempt to mimic the action caused by these aerated crashing waves. Protein skimmers physically remove dissolved organic compounds and other substances from a saltwater aquarium and are an important part of aquarium filtration and saltwater aquarium maintenance. These organic compounds are products of uneaten fish food, fish waste, and decomposing matter. Protein skimmers remove the wastes before they are broken down into nitrates. A saltwater aquarium or reef tank using a protein skimmer and professional saltwater aquarium service means higher water chemistry for a healthier saltwater aquarium.

Choosing a Quality Protein Skimmer

Here is what you need to know when choosing a protein skimmer. The size of the bubble is very important. Smaller bubbles rise more slowly in the water column than larger bubbles, giving them more time for organic compounds to attach to them. Smaller bubbles also have more surface area to which organic compounds can attach.

The water column in your protein skimmer should be almost white with bubbles. This means there will be millions of bubbles in the water column. If there is a lot of water with just a few bubbles in the water column the skimmer will not efficiently remove organic compounds.

An efficient protein skimmer will have thick, dark colored waste in its collection cup. If the waste is watery and pale or yellow in color adjust water level.

A skimmer that is too small will not operate effectively and will require more maintenance than one that is sized correctly for the gallons in the aquarium. Skimmer sizing on retail packaging can be general, and it may be prudent to purchase a skimmer that is rated for a larger aquarium if space and budget allow.

It is recommended to use a siphon to hydro-vacuum a crushed coral substrate bottom. When using a live sand substrate, the hydro vacuum method can be tricky because the siphon will remove the sand if you aren’t careful with the water flow. Also, with live sand bottom tanks, when possible incorporate sand sifting fish, invertebrates or sand sifting starfish to help turn the sand and keep it looking clean. Most of the Dallas Aquarium Experts shop tanks don’t have a substrate bottom. We find the water changes become more effective at removing the toxic waste products such as fish excrement and uneaten food particles inside the aquarium.

What water should I use to mix up saltwater?

It is recommended that only reverse osmosis de-ionized (RODI) water is used when mixing new saltwater. Most municipal water system’s water which has a combination of chloramines and chlorine, iron, phosphates, and other heavy metals. Over the years we have had the opportunity to purchase a hand full of local fish stores. After evaluating the stores, it never seemed to be the right fit for us. We are always open to the idea of purchasing an existing local fish store or any other opportunities within the aquarium industry, this includes but not limited to, a retail store front, another service company, I’m currently intrigued by manufacturing frozen aquarium foods, getting more involved with aquarium trades shows seems like a great opportunity to learn and make new connections. Scaling an aquarium service company is a slow process, I really like the idea expanding into a more scalable area of the industry.

A Passion for Aquariums

Morgan’s passion for aquariums started with his first pet goldfish at age 4, it was the best his single parent mother could do on a limited budget living in an apartment on a secretary’s wage in rural Colorado. There’s just something about having this underwater world you’re responsible for. As a child Morgan would design aquarium filtration systems and constantly make changes trying to find the perfect flow for the small underwater. There was such pride in being responsible for the aquarium, as well as a sense of accomplishment when the aquarium flourished. Visiting his favorite pet stores as a child was always on top of his to do list. He would save my lawn mowing money or birthday money until able to save up for whatever the next upgrade might be. As seventh grader he could tell you the best pet stores in almost any city in Colorado where the family might travel to. In the mid 80’s it went like this, in Fort Collins it was Denizens of the Deep and Tanglewood Aquarium, in Colorado Springs it was Silver Fin Aquarium, in Denver it was South Broadway Topicals, in Sterling it was Cher’s Pet Shop. You may be thinking why is this important to me? I’m just looking online for someone to clean my aquarium. Well, that’s great you say Morgan loves aquariums, however business owners with a passion for whatever they do, fail all the time. That’s what makes reaching our ten year anniversary such a mile stone, see our success isn’t just a passion for aquariums it’s also understanding what it takes to create a successful business.
