Dallas Aquarium Experts is now accepting applicants for an Aquarium Technician Position.

Dallas Aquarium Experts, a professional aquarium design, build, and aquarium service maintenance company is looking for a highly motivated and responsible individual. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide aquarium maintenance services through out the Collin, Denton and Dallas counties in the Dallas – Fort Worth Area.
Benefits and Compensation

Full time employment.
This position pays $11 – $17 per hour, depending on experience.
Uniform shirts and all service equipment will be provided
A company vehicle will be provided

The applicant must be able to perform all of the following duties and responsibilities without supervision. You must be able to stay on task and be self-motivated with a high degree of attention to detail. Have a strong ability in problem solving, fixing aquarium systems and working with your hands. You must be mechanically inclined, interact professionally and effectively through verbal and written communication with all professional contacts with emphasis on company interests. You must be comfortable and proficient working on your own, unsupervised and must maintain the highest respect for our clients throughout Collin, Denton and Dallas counties in the DFW Area.

Responsibilities: You MUST have the ability to;

Travel to job site.
Perform maintenance services on established client aquariums.
Perform water quality testing
Perform health assessments on all living organisms within the aquarium.
Perform water changes and filtration component cleaning.
Assess the overall aquarium display and the LSS to ensure proper long term operation.
Trouble shoot flow issues and water delivery issues.
Perform data entry and accurate record keeping
Perform other duties assigned by management

Physical Requirements: You MUST have the ability to;

Be able to lift up to 75 lbs.
Be able to bend or twist your body in order to work in tight spaces.

Abilities, knowledge and skills: You MUST possess;

Excellent organizational skills and a great work ethic.
Respect for client’s residence and space.
Experience in all types of aquarium displays (reef, salt water, fresh water live plants, etc)
Experience with growing corals.
Problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
Ability to work unsupervised.
Ability to work on call and complete work requirements within 24 to 96 hours of requests.
Experience in plumbing and working with PVC
Experience in plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems.
Knowledge of salt and fresh water aquatic systems.
Knowledge of LSS and filtration systems.
Maintain a good driving record and a valid drivers license.

All the waste created by the creatures living inside it will only build up and snowball into a bigger issue like diseases. This is why it’s important to constantly keep up with your aquarium maintenance.

Selecting an Aquarium

This is one of the most important things for your aquarium. Before you even start a fish tank you should have an idea of what fish you want and how many. Make sure you plan everything for the future. Some fish get more aggressive, some poop a lot more than others and some fish just simply do not belong in the aquarium, growing way too big for any normal home aquarium.

Feeding your Fish

This is an odd subject. There is a huge misconception about feeding fish. Yes, it’s true they don’t need so much food but it’s not true that they should be fed only once a day, contrary to popular belief. I have seen fish food labels and professionals give out this advice and it is simply not a good one. Fish in the wild are feeding constantly. Feeding only once a day may be ok for predatory fish but most tropical aquarium fish tend to be community fish that, in the wild, feed all day. Now, I’m not saying constantly feed your fish but just don’t feed them once a day if you want them to thrive. Realize the more you feed the aquarium the more frequent water changes will need to take place.

Aquarium Cleaning

The most important fish tank cleaning you can do is changing the water. Fish tank cleaning and the frequency of fish tank cleaning really depends on how much waste is being produced in the aquarium. Let’s say you have a 55 gallon tank. You have 10 fish averaging six inches. For this bio load it’s recommended you do at least 25% water change every week. Now if you had ten, one inch fish in the same tank, you would only need to do a 25% water change every four weeks and you will have same water quality. It’s all about figuring out how much you’re putting in there so you can figure out how much you should be taking out.

Aquarium Filtration

There is a lot of misconceptions about the filter and we will be going into detail how it works and what parts you should clean and which parts you should NEVER CLEAN. Generally, there are THREE different parts to an aquarium filter. First is the mechacnial stage usually a sponge is used to physically catch all the debris. Second is the chemical stage, usually of a freshwater aquarium carbon is used to remove heavy metals and other chemical toxicities. Third is your MOST IMPORTANT, your base for beneficial bacteria.

First Stage – Mechanical / Pre-Filter

Sponge filters are very helpful for a non-reef aquarium. These filters are the first defense is catching and removing (you have to do this part) debris from the aquarium. They are not recommended for a reef tank since reef tanks need absolutely pristine conditions and there are other more effective mechanical ways of removing waste. Like protein skimmers. Sponges will obviously trap all debris and will just keep building that debris until you clean it. It’s recommended in freshwater and fish only saltwater tanks to clean sponge filters once a month. But obviously more often the better.

Second Stage – Chemical / Carbon

The activated carbon part of the filter is mainly for chemical filtration. Carbon naturally has tremendous absorptive capacity and an affinity for a wide variety of dissolved organics. It will make your water clear and smell clean but it does remove processed fish waste nor does it help in the fish waste removal process.

Third Stage and MOST IMPORTANT Biological Filtration

This is usually the final stage the water passes through inside your filter. All this is, is just a host for two types of beneficial bacteria. In saltwater aquarium, live rock can actually be a better option as your filter media. And as a host these guys house good bacteria which in turn break down your fish waste into less toxic bi-products. You should never EVER clean this!

FOWLR (Fish-Only-With-Live-Rock): This aquarium features only a variety of saltwater fish species with live rock. Live rock is fragmented pieces of coral reefs naturally colonized with marine life including invertebrates, sponges and millions of beneficial nitrifying bacteria that provide additional filtration.
Specialty Species Tank: This saltwater aquarium focuses on a specific species, such as rays, jellyfish, seahorses, etc.

Freshwater Aquarium Service and Maintenance

There are many different types of freshwater aquariums to choose from:

Passive Freshwater Aquarium – type of freshwater aquarium populated by fish that would be considered passive and non-territorial.
Goldfish Aquarium – Goldfish are very frequently kept in a species specific type of freshwater aquarium. If you keep the tank around 74 degrees then a pleco or most catfish will do just fine as a bottom feeder tank mate.
Freshwater Planted Aquarium – a planted aquarium will most commonly be used in conjunction with passive community fish but this is not necessarily the case. You could have more semi-aggressive fish such as Barbs, Freshwater sharks, and Plecos that are still considered compatible with this type of freshwater aquarium.
Semi-Aggressive Aquarium – Aggressiveness is somewhat relative among fish. Some aggressive fish can attack other fish and kill them, eat other fish as food, or relentlessly chase other fish around until they die of stress. These fish will tend to be a little bigger and so need a bigger aquarium … probably 90 gallon at a minimum or larger range.
Cichlid Aquarium – Cichlids, especially African Cichlids, are another type of freshwater fish that are often kept in a species specific type of freshwater aquarium. They are very hardy and although very aggressive, typically will do well with each other and can be stocked at fairly high densities.

The key to a clean, healthy, thriving aquarium is consistent water changes and proper filtration. In most aquariums the number of fish, plants, corals and invertebrates, in relation to water volume, exceeds what would typically be found in nature.
